Animal Welfare Initiatives

  • Off-leash Dog Play Areas: Implemented improvements to Hart Park and initiated a pilot off-leash dog play area in Plummer Park.
  • Westside Animal Care Facility: My Council colleagues unanimously agreed to support advocacy efforts to develop a Westside animal care and training facility at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Campus (located in West LA), where stray animals can be cared for, made adoption-ready, as well as be trained to provide support for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other emotional and/or physical injuries. Reaching out to other public officials to gather support.
  • Grooming Operations Ordinance Update: Directed staff to implement stricter operating requirements for animal groomers, to help make grooming a safer experience for our 4-legged friends. The ordinance was finally brought back for our review and Council unanimously approved! I've been sharing our "new and improved" regulations with other cities in hopes of more consistent and more stringent regulations across the region.
  • Seniors for Seniors Animal Rescue Program: Directed staff to take steps to inform community members about “Seniors for Seniors” programs and partner with local rescue organizations to develop similar programs.
  • Kids & Pets Safety Campaign and Signage: Campaign and placement of permanent signage to educate and remind the community of the dangers of leaving children and pets unattended in a parked car during warmer weather. Thank you, Spike Meister, for supporting!
  • Animal Abuser Registry: Council weighed in support of a statewide or county-wide animal abuser registry and an ordinance that forbids any individual with a criminal record of animal abuse from adopting an animal within the City of West Hollywood.
  • Pet Week: An initiative to highlight pet-friendly businesses and develop “Pet Week” In West Hollywood.
  • Impact of COVID-19 on Animal Companions: Directed staff to complete the Better Cities for Pets™ free assessment and certification program.
  • Program To Spay/Neuter Community Cats: Directed staff to develop a program to help spay/neuter community cats in West Hollywood.
  • Pet Memorial Concept Exploration: Directed staff to evaluate community interest in, and feasibility of, establishing a memorial in honor of community members’ pets who have passed away.
  • Right to Rescue: Brought a resolution for Council to support AB 797, the Right to Rescue Act, which would protect individuals from civil and criminal liability for necessary actions taken in good faith to rescue an animal from a hot vehicle. This bill was passed!
  • World Dog Day!: Brought Vanderpump Dog Foundation's World Dog Day to Weho with the City as co-sponsor.
